چکیده

for detecting the crowding of texture are both at play. Disentangling the two will be an interesting challenge. One promising line, as Durgin [8] suggests, will be to look for dissociations between number and texture perception. Manuela Piazza, Stanislas Dehaene and Marco Zorzi (personal communication) have shown that dyscalculic individuals have higher Weber fraction for number discrimination than do controls. It would be interesting to study whether discrimination of texture is also affected in these individuals; and to test adaptation to both attributes. We suspect that the investigation of numerosity as a visual primitive will open a rich vein of connections between visual perception and mathematical intuition. Mathematicians often ‘see’ their solutions first and verify them later, as many testified to Hadamard [15].

Evolution of viruses and cells: do we need a fourth domain of life to explain the origin of eukaryotes?

The recent discovery of diverse very large viruses, such as the mimivirus, has fostered a profusion of hypotheses positing that these viruses define a new domain of life together with the three cellular ones (Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya). It has also been speculated that they have played a key role in the origin of eukaryotes as donors of important genes or even as the structures at the origi...

Incorporation of a Horizontally Transferred Gene into an Operon during Cnidarian Evolution

Genome sequencing has revealed examples of horizontally transferred genes, but we still know little about how such genes are incorporated into their host genomes. We have previously reported the identification of a gene (flp) that appears to have entered the Hydra genome through horizontal transfer. Here we provide additional evidence in support of our original hypothesis that the transfer was ...

Hemolytic venoms from marine cnidarian jellyfish – an overview

Cnidarian jellyfish are viewed as an emergent problem in several coastal zones throughout the world. Recurrent outbreaks pose a serious threat to tourists and bathers, as well as to sea-workers, involving health and economical aspects. As a rule, cnidarian stinging as a consequence of nematocyst firing induces merely local symptoms but cardiovascular or neurological complications can also occur...

FoxO and Stress Responses in the Cnidarian Hydra vulgaris

BACKGROUND In the face of changing environmental conditions, the mechanisms underlying stress responses in diverse organisms are of increasing interest. In vertebrates, Drosophila, and Caenorhabditis elegans, FoxO transcription factors mediate cellular responses to stress, including oxidative stress and dietary restriction. Although FoxO genes have been identified in early-arising animal lineag...
